"You may know that in Europe for instance, you’re limited to purchasing 400mg of vitamin C."

Someone had better tell my local branch of Holland and Barrett. They only seem to sell it in 500, 1000. 1500 and 2500mg doses.
There is nothing preventing European consumers from buying supplements in whatever dose they want. Admittedly this is still a work in progress, however as the most recent discussion document asks,(available here) "For some vitamins and minerals the risk of adverse effects, even at high levels
of intakes, appears to be extremely low or non-existent according to available
data. Is there any reason to set maximum levels for these vitamins and
minerals?"
This indicates to me that, rather than jumping in at the deep end with a series of inappropriate bans- which hasn't happened- the Commission will be taking an analytical data-led approach to its decision. It is unlikely that we will see armed raids on health-food stores and clinics similar to those carried out by the FDA between 1980 and 1994.

Unfortunately the html was stripped from my post, meaning that my link to the EU discussion paper on setting maximum and minimum amounts for vitamins and minerals in foodstuffs has been rendered useless. I have included it as the URL to which clicking my name should direct you. pdf warning- clicking it will cause your pdf reader application to start.

Thanks for sharing. It's good that there are certain laws for the safety of our food.
